Trump 'surprised' by Harley-Davidson move to shift work out of US

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence walk together on their way to greet Harley Davidson executives on the South Lawn of the White House

Now, Harley seems to encapsulate a lot of what's going wrong.

The company said it will take a hit of $30 million to $45 million for the rest of this year. The tactic is meant to give US factories producing those raw materials a better chance, because they'll be competing against importers who now have additional tariff costs.

These examples of job losses come amid promises from Donald Trump to save American jobs, casting doubt across the country about the effectiveness of Trump's tariff strategy for trade. "We are hopeful the USA and European Union governments will continue to work together to reach an agreement on trade issues and rescind these tariffs". "There's a lot of irony here, to put it mildly". The stock is down 17 per cent this year.

The move conflicts with the Trump administration's touting of the USA economy's strength.

Harley-Davidson said that moving some production from the U.S.to factories overseas could take at least nine to 18 months to be completed.

I was just a skinny kid from Germany. "That dream is very, very far away when you're over there, so it's exciting to be here". Pelinka praised not only Wagner's perimeter shooting, passing and footwork, but his personality.

The European Union, she alleged, is attempting to punish U.S. workers with unfair and discriminatory trade policies, and Trump will continue to push for free, fair and reciprocal trade in hopes that the EU will join is in that.

Harley-Davidson says that the bikes will cost $2,200 more a piece to export.

Harley-Davidson divulged the plans in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Monday morning which draws a direct link between the Trump administration's implementation of steel and aluminum tariffs against the European Union and its transfer of motorcycle production for "E.U. destinations" to "international facilities". But since then the company has been counting the costs of his trade policies. In January, it said it would consolidate its Kansas City, Missouri, plant into its York, Pennsylvania, facility. Who knows? Since no one in the White House seems to understand how worldwide trade works, and we've seen how capricious and easily distracted The Donald is, it's 50/50 whether or not the tariffs go into effect or he gets distracted by a squirrel and forgets all about them.

Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. will shift production of motorcycles for Europe to its worldwide facilities to avoid up to $100 million annually in costs from tariffs applied by the European Union.

Donald Trump rose to presidency in the United States touting himself as a master negotiator.

Iran vs. Portugal - Football Match Report
The 2018 World Cup enters the final round of group stage games today with all teams from groups A and B playing on Monday. Fans of the Iran national team, which takes on Portugal in a win-or-go-home match on Monday, apparently, do not.

Harley has been dealing with woes independent of Trump's policies. Overseas sales also have been stalling. He called the plan the "latest slap in the face to the loyal, highly skilled work force" that builds the company's bikes.

Adding to the difficulty facing the company were steel and aluminum tariffs on the EU, Canada and Mexico finalized by the Trump administration at the start of June.

"Harley-Davidson maintains a strong commitment to US-based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally".

"We are now assessing the potential impact on our United States facilities", Michael Pflughoeft, a company spokesman, said in an email. Harley fell 2.2% on Friday as European Union tariffs against Harley took effect. To avoid this cost, the country will shift to countries where there are lower or no tariffs.

Shares in the company sank nearly 6% after the firm announced its decision, which is expected to add between $30m and $45m to its expenses this year.

Some analysts expect to see more instances of company shifts in supply chain or manufacturing venues due to trade tariffs when the second-quarter earnings season kicks off in early next month.
