Canada retaliates, starts tariffs against the US

Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the country will not back down on retaliatory tariffs

Trudeau thanked residents there and Canadians for always standing up for one another.

"This is who we are, we're there for each other in times of difficulty, in times of opportunity".

"Glad to be here to remind everyone that Canadians stand up for each other".

The new taxes are based the amount of steel and aluminum that was shipped from Canada to the United States past year, according to reports.

The selection of Leamington, known as Canada's tomato capital, was deliberate. Both industries are at the centre of the current trade dispute with the United States.

Canada slapped the USA with tariffs on over $12 billion worth of goods Sunday as the country celebrates Canada Day.

The tariffs target products like ketchup, lawn mowers, yogurt and playing cards.

Today is the first day that Canada's retaliatory tariffs against U.S. steel, aluminum and other products went into effect.

The financial disclosures for possible Supreme Court nominees
McConnell sets the agenda and hopes to have the new justice in place by October, which is when the Supreme Court term begins. On Monday, Trump interviewed federal appeals judges Raymond Kethledge, Amul Thapar, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

It appears Trump, too, is not backing down.

Canada, a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States and Mexico, on July 1 imposed retaliatory measures on C$16.6 billion ($12.63 billion) of American goods, including coffee, ketchup and whiskey.

The future of the North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations was injected with a new dose of uncertainty with the election of a new president in Mexico on Sunday. The move has been viewed as a possible negotiating ploy to restart NAFTA talks, which could resume following Sunday's elections in Mexico.

The key USA trade ally said the countermeasures will remain in effect until the Trump administration limits its trade restrictions on its goods.

He said tariffs on the auto industry would increase the cost of a US -built vehicle for an American buyer by as much as $3,000.

Business executives last week told lawmakers that escalation into an all-out trade war would be devastating to the Canadian economy, which sends about 75 percent of its exports to the US. "We will not escalate and we will not back down", she said, while noting that this trade action was the strongest Ottawa has taken since World War II.

Trudeau was speaking on the front steps of Highbury Canco with CEO Sam Diab.

A fresh round of talks on the three-country pact will come with Canada and the US locked in an unprecedented, cross-border trade fight.

Ex-Malaysian PM Najib Arrested amid Embezzlement Scandal Probe
Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says that authorities have an "almost ideal case" against Najib and his allies. New Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad reopened investigations into 1MDB that were stifled under Najib's rule.

"The two leaders agreed to stay in close touch on a way forward", it added.

"Our company will survive no matter what". "It is fair and measured response", said Goodale.

"That we will not just be victims of American policy, that we're going to fight back".

"It's not about corporate board rooms and decision-making at some 30,000-foot level".

After that meeting, Trump tweeted that Trudeau was "weak" and "dishonest".

Angela Egan said she feels Trump is trying to "bully" Canada into submission.

"I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing but it is something that we absolutely will do", he said.

Many U.S. manufacturers have decried the tariffs. "Everybody said, 'Uh, can we get on to another subject?"' "People do it, families do it, so I don't think this is a big deal". Do you know what happened?

President Trump to Make Choice on SCOTUS Nominee on July 9
The 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide won't be overturned automatically, nor without a fight. The pick could further shift the court to the right and solidify its conservative bent for years or even decades.

He then returned to his themes from earlier in the day, talking about Canadians being "there for each other", looking to the future "with optimism and strength", and "facing down any challenges that come our way".
