Google explains Gmail privacy after controversy

Mikael Berner, the CEO of Edison Software, a Gmail developer that offers a mobile app for organising email, told The Journal that its employees had read emails from hundreds of Gmail users as part of an effort to build a new feature. The Wall Street Journal reports that while many of these companies use algorithms to trawl through your emails for keywords, some allow their employees to examine them, too.

Even as Facebook struggles to recover from the massive data scandal that wiped off billions of dollars from its market cap, other tech giants aren't breathing easy either.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, "hundreds of outside software developers scan the inboxes of millions of Gmail users" who have given permission for these apps to connect in return for things like price-comparison services and travel alerts. Google's own employees read emails only "in very specific cases where you ask us to and give consent, or where we need to for security purposes, such as investigating a bug or abuse", the company said in a written statement. The Alphabet offshoot, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment, did not disclose how many apps have Gmail access.

One could say that users are responsible for granting access to their data.

German Chancellor Merkel says compromise on migration reached with CSU
However, there seems to be little appetite among Social Democrats leaders to oppose the plan this time and trigger another crisis. To save her coalition, Merkel agreed to build transit camps for refugees trying to cross into Germany from Austria.

According to The Verge, Return Path and Edison Software did not acknowledge that in some cases humans will have access to emails.

"The practice of automatic processing has caused some to speculate mistakenly that Google "reads" your emails", the blog post says.

Google said that it provides data to outside developers who have been vetted and who have been granted permission by users to access their email.

Before you freak out, you should know that you've probably given your consent to those apps scanning your inbox, and, thus, having computers automatically go through your emails.

Five Years After Going Private, Dell Is Going Public Again
Dell reported an upbeat first quarter, signaling the improving corporate technology spending environment has boosted its fortunes. Earlier this year, Dell disclosed that it was considering a reverse merger with VMware as part of its public market return.

You can remove access for any service or application listed on the page and should do so for any that you don't use.

Last year, Google assured its users that its computers would stop scanning emails and keep the privacy and security paramount.

If you want to find out which apps have access to your account information, it's rather simple.
