New study reveals coffee drinking may boost life expectancy

The study from the U.S. National Cancer Institute used information from more than half a million British volunteers who provided blood samples and answered detailed health and lifestyle questions.

That's because a massive new British study, examining the coffee habits and longevity of almost 500,000 adults, says there's an unmistakable across-the-board increase in longevity among people who drink lots of coffee.

"We found that people who drank two to three cups per day had about a 12 percent lower risk of death compared to non-coffee drinkers", study author Erikka Loftfield told NPR.

It was also the first large study to suggest a benefit even in people with genetic glitches affecting how their bodies use caffeine. Nearly one-third of those in the study drank two or three cups of coffee daily, and 10,000 hardcore types guzzled at least eight cups daily.

A new study shows that people who drink coffee, even those who drink eight or more cups a day, are less likely to die early than non-coffee drinkers.

In the 10 years of follow-up, more than 14,000 people died.

This adds to a significant body of research indicating that coffee is connected to a long list of health benefits.

The lower risk of death held true with both caffeinated and decaf coffee, leading researchers to believe the value of coffee lies in the beans.

The study included 498,134 non-pregnant participants who drank 1 to up to 8 cups of coffee daily.

Context like the general recommendation from experts to stick to 400 mg of caffeine per day (about four cups of coffee) - too much of the stuff tends to lead to problems like insomnia or heartburn.

Katharine McPhee engaged to David Foster - KVOA | KVOA.com | Tucson, Arizona
TMZ is reporting that the 68-year-old musician and songwriter popped the question during their European vacation. Katharine McPhee attends the 72nd Annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 10, 2018.

The sheer number of studies out there on this subject proves that scientists are fascinated with coffee.

The study didn't have enough data from people who drink that much coffee, Giovannucci said.

The results remained the same whether the coffee was ground, instant or decaffeinated. Those who consumed five or more cups a day had no higher risk than those who consumed none. "Also, the women with the highest caffeine intakes were older, more likely to be poorly educated or obese prior to pregnancy, and to smoke during pregnancy".

Mechanisms to explain the protective effect of coffee consumption include reduced inflammation, improved insulin sensitivity, and effects on liver enzyme levels and endothelial function, according to the study.

"Coffee makes you happy, it gives you something to look forward to in the morning", he said. But it turns out that even slow caffeine metabolizers seem to share the death-risk-reduction connected to coffee drinking. The research adds to the growing list of studies that highlight the benefits of drinking coffee.
