213000 more hired in June; jobless rate rises to 4 percent

The U.S. economy added 213,000 jobs in June, as unemployment rose to 4 percent

The labor force expanded by 601,000 jobs over the month, with an influx of new women and teen workers more than offsetting a dip in labor force participation among men, said Gregory Daco of Oxford Economics.

In another sign of vigorous demand for labor, the results for April and May were revised higher by a total of 37,000 new jobs, bringing the average for the past three months to 211,000.

Many analysts read the higher jobless rate as an encouraging sign because the influx of almost 76,000 job seekers back into the labour market last month suggested more people are optimistic they can find work thanks to the hotter economy. Hourly wages increased by 0.2 percent for an average annual increase of 2.7 percent, lower than analysts had hoped.

"Let's remember that for some time, the unemployment rate has been below the level typically associated with 'full employment, ' but the relatively robust level of hiring being seen suggests there's more room" for the jobless rate to drop, he added. President Donald Trump's tax cuts have provided a dose of stimulus this year, but the benefits have been tilted significantly toward wealthy individuals and corporations.

Police confirmed that while no bones had been broken, the deep laceration was so severe the unidentified woman would need surgery. But when Emergency Medical Technicians arrived, the woman gave in and agreed to ride in their ambulance to get medical treatment.

In April, there were up to 6.7 million job openings in the United States; the number was more than the people who were unemployed but were seeking unemployment. Among the strongest industries for job growth during the month was manufacturing, which extended a surge in hiring by adding 36,000 jobs even with tariffs in place. BLS reported that 1,141,400 people were employed in legal services in June, a figure that includes lawyers, paralegals, legal secretaries and other law-related professions.

The labour force growth is likely to be welcomed by the Bank of Canada, which has been arguing that pockets of untapped market slack remain that could limit wage and price pressures.

The economy also faces a substantial threat from the Trump administration's trade war with China and from other, ongoing trade disputes with USA allies, including Canada and Europe.

Trump has also spoken about slapping tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts, which General Motors has warned could hurt the US auto industry and drive up vehicle prices. Automakers added 12,000 jobs in June. In H1 of past year, the increase was 1.1 million.

For many, the jobs numbers helped reinforce their predictions.

Update: Here's another chart, this one showing monthly job losses/gains in just the private sector since the start of the Great Recession.

On the losing end was retail, which shed 21,600 jobs in June, mainly at general merchandise stores. "Combined with additional jobs and steady hours, payrolls are up by 5 percent since June 2017".

The EPOP for Hispanics rose 0.4 percentage points to 63.4 percent, a new high for the recovery, while their unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent, the lowest on record.
