North Korea attacks 'gangster-like' US

Pompeo is greeted by North Korean Director of the United Front Department Kim Yong Chol and North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho as he arrives at Sunan International Airport in Pyongyang

It was not clear if Pompeo would be granted an audience with the Northern leader himself as he tries to develop a detailed road-map towards the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean peninsula, as agreed by Kim and US President Donald Trump last month.

"The establishment of peaceful relations between the countries, increased security assurances to North Korea and its people, and finally, denuclearization", Pompeo said.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert on Saturday said USA and North Korean officials have established a working group to deal with the "nitty-gritty stuff", according to pool reporters accompanying Pompeo.

"The attitude and demands from the USA side during the high-level talks were nothing short of deeply regrettable", a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Pompeo has the crucial task of dispelling growing skepticism over how seriously Kim is about giving up his nuclear arsenal and translate the upbeat rhetoric following the first meeting between leaders of the usa and North Korea into concrete action.

Pompeo also told reporters that he discussed the destruction of a missile test site that Trump said was already being dismantled.

China trade war breaks out as tariffs kick in
Until now, only $3bn of tariffs have taken effect, but President Trump has threatened new tariffs on many occasions. Trump discussed the trade war Thursday with journalists who flew with him to Montana for a campaign rally.

Pompeo, however, said that more talks were needed on both. "We now have a meeting set up for July 12 - it could move by one day or two - where there will be discussions between the folks responsible for the repatriation of remains", he said.

Pompeo said both the testing facility issue and recovering USA remains still need to be finalized. This prompted the President to reportedly ask Pompeo to take the Elton John CD with him on what would be his third trip to North Korea since April, The Guardian reported on Friday.

However, the president has since renewed sanctions on North Korea, while U.S. intelligence officials have said there is evidence North Korea continues to upgrade the infrastructure for its nuclear and missile programmes. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said no meeting with Kim Jong-un had been planned.

His rosy outlook was nearly immediately rejected by North Korea's foreign ministry, which called the USA attitude to the talks "regrettable" and accused the United States of making unilateral demands for denuclearization.

At the beginning of the meeting, Kim Yong Chol said both sides held "a very serious discussion on very important matters yesterday".

Nauert declined to characterize the discussions so far, but said, "We expect them to live up to their commitments".

She said the man then got out of the vehicle , staggered across the street and collapsed in a nearby parking lot. Neither she nor her two children - ages two and four - were hurt during the shooting or crash. "I didn't.

"So, thinking about those discussions you might have not slept well."
Mr Pompeo said he "slept just fine".

Talks with North Korea, the main reason why the Trump administration ditched a high-level dialogue with India on July 6 doesn't seem to have panned out very well for Washington.

"I am determined to achieve the commitment that President Trump made", Pompeo said.

Pompeo and Kim met for almost three hours Friday and then had dinner amid growing skepticism over how serious Kim Jong Un is about giving up his nuclear arsenal and translating the upbeat rhetoric following his summit with Trump into concrete action.

There had been previous signs that all was not well on the diplomatic front during Pompeo's trip, which marked the most most significant engagement between the countries since the Trump-Kim summit on June 12 in Singapore.

The secretary has come under increasing pressure to produce results, with Trump having touted the summit as a game-changing moment that eliminated North Korea's nuclear threat.
