Woman trapped by Boston subway train says ‘I can’t afford an ambulance’

Injured woman begs people not to call ambulance because she can’t afford

A woman trapped between a train and a platform in Boston, with her bone exposed through her thigh, pleaded with bystanders not to call an ambulance, asking them "do you know how much an ambulance costs?"

Ms Cramer later reported on the incident in a newspaper article, where she described the way passengers had rallied to help the woman.

Polanco says the woman started crying because she couldn't afford to pay for an ambulance call, and insisted she be left to go home and tend the wound on her own. But there was something the woman was more anxious about than her injuries: the ambulance.

A woman getting off Boston's Orange Line last week fell and was trapped between the subway platform and the train until her fellow passengers were able to free her. Within minutes, several of them had rallied and synchronized, and were attempting to push the train just enough to allow her to take out her leg.

The story picked up more traction when The New York Times editorial board wrote about the platform accident on Monday with the headline: "This Tweet Captures the State of Health Care in America Today".

Police confirmed that while no bones had been broken, the deep laceration was so severe the unidentified woman would need surgery.

But when Emergency Medical Technicians arrived, the woman gave in and agreed to ride in their ambulance to get medical treatment.

Another bystander told CNN, "She made it a point to say 'you don't understand, I have awful insurance.'" The woman was eventually convinced to go with emergency medical technicians who arrived at the scene. "Everyone just kept saying don't worry about that, you need medical help".

The woman has not been identified.

Ambulance costs vary depending on location and distance traveled, but news reports are full of stories of ambulances costing $2,700 for a 2-mile ride or $3,660 for a four-mile trip.

According to the police, the accident occurred as the woman was getting off the train.
