Boris Johnson quits as Britain's foreign minister

David Davis leaving the BBC by taxi this morning

May's office said it had accepted Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson's resignation on Monday, hours after Brexit minister David Davis, in charge of exit negotiations with the bloc, quit on Sunday night.

Davis quit late Sunday saying he could not support May's plans for close trade and regulatory ties with the bloc after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union next year.

The departures raise the stakes for May, who believed that she had secured a hard-won agreement with her deeply divided cabinet of ministers on Friday to keep the closest possible trading ties with the EU.

May's spokesman said she would fight any attempt to unseat her over her Brexit plan, which was welcomed by business leaders but angered leading Conservative eurosceptics by proposing to keep Britain closely aligned with European Union regulations in goods trade, although not services - Britain's main export sector.

May replied to his letter to say she did not agree "with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at cabinet on Friday".

"What the Prime Minister needs to do is to give up on the Chequers proposal. which does not actually deliver Brexit", he told LBC Radio. She thanked him for his work.

The PM's Brexit strategy was met with condemnation by many Eurosceptic MPs within her Conservative party, with many claiming the blueprint would be worse than "no deal".

International Development Secretary, and one of the most committed Brexiteers in the Tory party, Penny Mordaunt, welcomed the news, but Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer cast into doubt the efficacy of the new appointee.

He said that the Conservative party does not have a "great history of changing their leaders".

They fear a clean break would cost jobs.

Monday's move may look dramatic, but Viraj Patel, a currency strategist at Dutch bank ING, says that the drop is not the start of a major downward trend for the pound - for the time being a least.

At this rate we could have a snap general election on our hands right as England wins the World Cup.

She said she would now focus on moving the exit negotiations on - a step European Union officials and businesses have long called for. "I won't be encouraging people to do that, I think it's the wrong thing to do".

Ministers signed off on a blueprint for a new U.K. -EU "free trade area", with interwoven customs regimes, and identical regulations for industrial and agri-food goods.
