Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

Prime Minister Theresa May could shortly propose a Brexit model that is similar to the relationship enjoyed between Jersey and the EU

So Mrs May has diverted the country towards a softer Brexit and saved her job.

The agreed proposal - which also says Britain's large services sector will not have the current levels of access to European Union markets - will not come soon enough for Brussels, which has been pressing May to come up with a detailed vision for future ties.

MP Phillip Lee, who resigned from the government over its handling of Brexit, said Mrs May's efforts to find the "least worst" option was not in the best interests of the country.

Loud applause could be heard at the end of the 1922 Committee meeting, which the PM attended for just over an hour.

Arch-Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg hit out at the "defeatism" in the Government's plans, warning that he would vote against them - and suggested other Eurosceptics may do the same.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson meanwhile let it be known that he planned to stay in the Cabinet because he felt this would be the best platform from which to fight moves to soften the government's position further.

Mr Johnson does not pull any punches, saying Brexit "should be about opportunity and hope" and a "chance to do things differently", but "that dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt". And she reiterated her position that there would not be a referendum on the final deal to leave the European Union, or any attempt to put back the exit date of March 29, 2019. It would also accept a limited role for bloc's top court.

Theresa May only has a majority in Parliament with the support of the 10 MPs from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, so any split raises questions about whether her plan could survive a Commons vote.

The Brexit Secretary's resignation follows growing tension in the cabinet of Theresa May over her vision of a post-Brexit relationship with the EU.

He added: "What we have here forms the basis for a good deal for Scotland". Well done David Davis for having the principal and guts to resign. According to the BBC, the politicians were able to overcome differences over the strategy of withdrawal from the European Union. "One of the things about this compromise is that it unites the Cabinet".

Her Downing Street office said May will unveil the plan - the "facilitated customs arrangement" - to her team of ministers at her country residence Chequers, trying to secure an agreement to push on with all-but-stalled Brexit talks.

It would involve a "facilitated customs arrangement" meant to remove the need for a hard border in Ireland, and the creation of a UK-EU free-trade area, in which the UK would abide by a "common rule book" of EU regulations.

Boris Johnson's four-letter rant about the plan at Friday's Chequers away day, briefed to the Sunday newspapers, was about the extent of it, to the chagrin of backbench Brexiteers who had urged Ministers to walk out if they did not get their way.

The Foreign Secretary also claimed anyone defending the plans "would be polishing a turd" - before deciding he would himself back it.

Dead, 70 Injured in Turkish Train Derailment
Over the past few years, Turkish cities have been building high-speed rail lines to replace the country's ageing network. Television footage showed numerous injured being carried away on stretchers as the train carriages lay on their sides.

Barnier also said the two should "de-dramatize" a backstop proposed by Brussels to avoid erecting a border on the island of Ireland after Brexit that would see the European Union governing some of Northern Ireland trade.

The free movement of people was ending, he said, and the UK Parliament would have the final say over rules governing a "huge swathe" of the British economy. May wants to end this freedom of movement, replacing it with a vague "mobility framework".

What was the reaction in the Commons?

Michael Gove, May's environment minister, said on Sunday that while the agreed negotiating stance was not flawless, he believed it delivered on handing back control to Britain.

Former party leader Iain Duncan Smith described Mrs May's plans as "totally incompatible with our status as an independent state".

What has been the reaction from the EU?

What does it all mean for Brexit?

The agreement hammered out at the prime minister's country residence resolves - for the moment - a long-running dispute within the Cabinet over whether to sever all ties with the European Union or seek a more limited Brexit to help businesses accustomed to trading with continental Europe without customs payments or burdensome paperwork.

We could only prove our worth by working hard", said Cherchesov. "We felt your support from the first second". We succeeded but we have to keep going forward".

The aim of the Chequers away day had been to agree the United Kingdom position - after two years of discussion - but the resignations have put a question mark over that.
