Baby found buried in debris near Lolo Hot Springs is recovering

Crowley allegedly told authorities that he had buried the baby "somewhere in the mountains".

The sheriff's office said authorities were called to the Lolo Hot Springs area of Montana's Lolo National Forest at about 8 p.m. Saturday night (11 p.m. ET) on a report of a man threatening people and acting unusual. Callers said he had a gun and was threatening people.

While the deputies were trying to track down the man, another 911 call came in saying he had returned to Lolo Hot Springs, where he was ultimately apprehended. During questioning, he appeared to be under the influence of drugs and indicated the baby was buried somewhere in the mountains.

Almost six-and-a-half hours later, an officer heard "the faint cry of a baby", and found the child face down on the ground, buried under a pile of forest debris.

A five-month-old baby has miraculously survived after being buried under a pile of sticks and debris in a forest for more than nine hours. The infant was brought to a nearby hospital and in good condition, the sheriff's office said.

"Upon arrival, deputies discovered the suspect, 32-year-old Francis Carlton Crowley, had left the area and that a 5-month-old who had been left in his care had not been seen for several hours", the sheriff's office said in the post.

Missoula County Search and Rescue and U.S. Forest Service and Bureau officers along with the Bureau of Land Management, the Montana Highway Patrol, and additional deputies all responded to take part in a ground search. "He followed the sound and found the baby alive, face down", reads the post.

The baby boy only suffered minor injuries despite wearing wet and soiled clothes when he was buried in cold weather in western Montana. They say they won't be confirming names to protect the baby's identity.

Crowley may face other charges, the sheriff's office said.
