China may be exerting 'negative pressure' on North Korea

North Korea says it won’t bow down to “gangster-like” U.S. on denuclearization

US President Donald Trump has suggested Beijing may be seeking to derail efforts aimed at denuclearising North Korea, but added that he was confident that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would uphold a pact the two agreed on last month. They buy $100 billion from us.

'The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know critics will try to minimize what we have achieved, ' he said. Though Trump claimed "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea" following the Singapore summit, US officials cited by NBC News reported that the country is still covertly producing uranium for nuclear weapons.

The administration worked for months to win China's support for its "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions to isolate North Korea, which does most of its global trade with the Chinese. He added, "While we are encouraged by the progress of these talks, progress alone does not justify the relaxation of the existing sanctions regime".

The statement came shortly after Pompeo said he had made progress "on nearly all of the central issues" in the talks, including on setting a timeline for its denuclearisation, though more work remained to be done.

However, the North Korean Foreign Ministry later released a lengthy statement that criticized the US focus on nuclear weapons.

Monday, and it is unclear how much of the last-minute maneuvering is geared to keeping the president's choice a secret. The "Sherpa", or person guiding the nominee through that process, has not yet been confirmed.

The comments came after Pompeo had earlier Sunday in Tokyo brushed aside North Korea's accusation that the USA was making "gangster-like" denuclearization demands of the North.

"We were able to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the continued strengthening of our trilateral cooperation toward the common goal of North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement" of all nuclear weapons and missiles, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono told a joint press conference.

The North Korean statement indicated such gestures hadn't gone far enough, saying the United States moves were "highly reversible" and left its military force intact "without scraping even a rifle".

Analysts have cautioned of a hard road ahead given decades of hostility, unkept promises, and the widespread belief, shared by USA intelligence agencies, that North Korea would never give up the nuclear weapons it sought for so long.

After two days of talks with senior officials, he said efforts to push Pyongyang towards abandoning nuclear weapons had global backing.

"Most of the time you don't come back with anything".

"The issues the USA side insisted on during the talks were the same cancerous ones that the past US administrations had insisted on", it added.

Analysts said that North Korea's statement was not unexpected but that there may indeed be a long way to go in U.S.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (R) and Kim Yong Chol (L). Most of goods enter North Korea through the Chinese border. The larger question is whether North Korea really intends to surrender its nuclear weapons entirely.

"If they are able to do this, they will be remembered, and Chairman Kim will be remembered, as a hero of the Korean people", Mr Pompeo said.
