President Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court

Trump has decided his Supreme Court nominee as parties prepare for fight

Judge Brett Kavanaugh was nominated by President Donald Trump for the US Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh, 53, began his career as a clerk to Kennedy.

Speaking of the president's shortlist, which The Hill reported includes Brett Kavanaugh, Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman, Graham suggested that any conservative Republican would be happy with the options-touting Hardiman in particular as a good choice.

The nominee has amassed a solidly conservative judicial record since 2006 on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the same court where three current justices including Chief Justice John Roberts previously served. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace long-serving conservative Justice Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81. He also has taken an expansive view of executive power and has favoured limits on investigating the president. McConnell said he will push for a vote on the nomination before the November midterms.

Trump prefaced the reveal with a brief address, saying that like President Reagan before him, he was looking for "judges who apply the Constitution as written".

Kavanaugh's family was present when Trump made the announcement.

England will take on Sweden in Samara at 3pm on Saturday, July 7 followed by Russian Federation vs Croatia in Sochi at 7pm. And on that basis, the golazos so far at the 2018 World Cup are certainly up there with those at any previous tournament.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, who once held a court seat open for almost a year before the 2016 election to keep former President Barack Obama from filling it, lambasted Democrats for announcing their opposition before Trump had decided on a nominee. The choice comes about two weeks after Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced he would retire by July 31.

But his supporters cite his experience and wide range of legal opinions.

"Republicans are holding four lottery tickets, and all of them are winners", said Sen. His first, Justice Neil Gorsuch was confirmed to the high court in April 2017. He has ruled against voting rights.

The appointment is seen as crucial because Kennedy was often a swing vote who would sometimes side with the court's four conservative justices and at other times with its liberals. At the top of that list is abortion. She once called a 1992 Supreme Court decision that upheld Roe v. Wade "erroneous". Kavanaugh said, "My judicial philosophy is straightforward". Kethledge, 51, is a judge for the Cincinnati, Ohio-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, while Hardiman, 52, serves on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals - also appointed by Bush. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case.

While the USA president has been pondering his choice, his aides have been preparing for what is expected to be a tough confirmation fight.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Collins and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, to oppose any nominee who threatens Roe v. Wade.

Kyl, a former member of Republican leadership, served on the Senate Judiciary Committee before retiring in 2013.

Kyl now works as a visiting fellow for the American enterprise institute and as senior of counsel for Covington & Burling, a high powered Washington D.C. law firm. It's a similar playbook to one the group followed a year ago with Judge Neil Gorsuch. And I believe this person will do a great job. Some, like Democratic SEn.

Meanwhile, liberal groups are already calling on two moderate Republican senators - Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska - to reject the nominee.

Blumenthal told Stephanopoulos on "This Week" that the public supports abortion rights.

President Trump campaigned with a promise to conservatives that he would fill the federal courts, from the top on down, with judges to their liking.
