WhatsApp's new forwarded label: All you need to know

The new feature will help users identify suspicious links shared within the platform

As rumours on WhatsApp continue to spread unchecked, the messaging app owned by social media giant Facebook Inc on Tuesday published a full-page advertisement in Indian newspapers with tips to fight fake news.

WhatsApp has recently been in talks for spreading the fake news. The Facebook-owned messaging service has started testing a new feature dubbed Suspicious Link Detection to detect suspicious links being sent through the messenger. The move came after a series of violent lynchings were triggered by the spread of false information.

The several measures have been taken out by WhatsApp so that it is not used a medium to mobilise mobs. "If you read something that makes you angry or afraid, ask whether it was shared to make you feel that way". According to WhatsApp, "many messages containing hoaxes or fake news have spelling mistakes".

"Like the government of India, we're horrified by these bad acts of violence and wanted to respond quickly to the very important issues you have raised". We encourage you to think before sharing messages that were forwarded. In one of the features set to roll out this week WhatsApp users will be able to distinguish messages that have been forwarded. "We will build on these efforts", outlines the news advertisement. The app also restricted the dissemination of false messages through a 'Send Messages' permissions feature for groups that allow group admins to limit participants from sending messages.
