Federer suffers shock Wimbledon quarter-final exit

Wimbledon 2018

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer says he "did not see defeat coming" before a shock quarter-final exit against Kevin Anderson.

The eighth-seeded Anderson needed four hours and 17 minutes to battle past the eight-time Wimbledon champion 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 on Court 1 and will face the victor of the John Isner vs. Milos Raonic encounter in the semi-finals.

Federer seemed rattled and his forehand began to look vulnerable and it was that stroke which allowed Anderson a decisive break of serve at 3-3 in the fourth. The final score in favor of Anderson: 2-6, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11.

Federer and Anderson, who played 24 games in the deciding fifth set, had still not finished by the time Nadal and Del Potro took the Centre Court. Nerves and serves were severely tested in the afternoon sunshine, but Anderson, a 32-year-old who has cracked at such moments in the past, was the one who held firmest this time.

Anderson stayed in the match thanks to his serving, compiling 28 aces.

That familiarity with playing styles could affect how these teams approach one another in this semifinals match. And for me, big occasions, big players, and numerous players they were not there in the big occasion.

Federer responded, quickly breaking back before taking the set in a tie-break.

When he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the US Open a year ago, he was the first South African man in a Slam final since Curren at the 1984 Australian Open. The Swiss lost his serve, putting the match in Anderson's big-serving hands.

"It just wasn't one of my best days", Federer, who won the first set in 26 minutes, told reporters.

This feat follows Anderson's 2015 battle with Novak Djokovic, where he took the Serb to five sets in the Wimbledon round of 16 in 2015. Federer no less than hammered Anderson to clinch the first set 6-2. But, Nadal being extremely gifted, zoomed in his career to heights, while Anderson, until previous year was nearly an unknown name among the tennis fans who watch the sport only for the likes of Federer and Nadal.

Federer's bid to win a ninth Wimbledon title came to an astonishing end as the defending champion collapsed in a nail-biting four hour and 13 minute classic that ranks among the tournament's greatest upsets.

Nishikori, playing in his first quarterfinal at the All England Club, was bidding to become the first Japanese man to make the Wimbledon semifinals in 85 years.

Anderson then served it out, ending things with a 205kph service victor, and raised both arms overhead.

"I think I had my chances, so it's disappointing". In the semifinals, Anderson will face the victor of the matchup between American John Isner, the No. 9 seed, and Canada's Milos Raonic, the No. 13 seed. "I felt like I did some good business here in the past already", he said. The 37-year-old vows to be back. I scraped through the third and fourth sets.

"Well, maybe wasn't my best, but I thought I was playing good enough", said Nishikori.

"Honestly, I'm not sure", the 20-times Grand Slam champion said when asked where it had all gone wrong.

And the 19-year-old was overwhelmed at the thought of helping France reach the final in his first appearance at a World Cup. Fox Sport Asia : "This should be a very intriguing match-up given the depth of talent that these two teams have".

He said: 'I felt like in the last month and a half, the level of tennis has been very close to where I would like it to be, where I'm used to having it.
