Lawsuits Alleging Roundup Causes Cancer To Advance

A federal US judge on Tuesday allowed hundreds of lawsuits alleging that Monsanto Co's glyphosate-containing weed-killer Roundup causes cancer to proceed to trial, finding that there was sufficient evidence for a jury to hear the cases.

The ruling Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria allows hundreds of lawsuits against Roundup's manufacturer, Monsanto, to move forward.

While evidence that glyphosate - the active ingredient in Roundup - can cause Hodgkin's lymphoma is "rather weak", the opinions of the three experts are not "junk science" that should be excluded from a trial, Chhabria ruled.

He spent a week in March hearing from epidemiologists and other doctors.

This case is a separate one from a class-action suit that involves more than 300 plaintiffs who argue that their exposure to Monsanto's weed killer caused them to also develop non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Charles Oakley arrested for cheating at casino
He last made headlines in 2017 when he was forcibly removed and arrested while attending a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. Oakley got in a fight with a security guard, causing a pause in the game, before being dragged away.

The company is facing hundreds of lawsuits in state and federal courts that claim otherwise.

However, Monsanto said there's no evidence of a connection between their product and cancer.

But he said a sensible jury could conclude, based on the results of four experts he allowed, that glyphosate can cause cancer in humans.

Monsanto says in court filings that glyphosate has been deemed safe by "every major regulatory agency". Farmers in California have been using the weed killer on more than 200 types of crops. Chhabria is presiding over more than 400 of them.

In 2015, the World Health Organization, however, classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. As a result, the European Union relicensed its use for gardens and farms earlier this year.

Trump Administration Aims to Steer People Toward Junk Health Plans Over Obamacare
The nonprofit insurer sued the government in 2016 claiming the risk adjustment program unfairly penalized smaller insurers. The agency also said that the people confused by health insurance benefits can use insurance agents and brokers for help.

A flurry of lawsuits against Monsanto followed, and California added glyphosate to its list of chemicals known to cause cancer.

A federal judge in Sacramento has blocked California from requiring that Roundup carry a label stating that it is known to cause cancer, saying the warning is misleading because nearly all regulators have concluded that there is no evidence glyphosate is carcinogenic.

Monsanto introduced glyphosate in the market in the 1970s.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last September concluded glyphosate is likely not carcinogenic to humans. A draft report by the agency past year concluded the herbicide is not likely to be carcinogenic to people.
