Man loses limbs after contracting an infection from a dog lick

‘Hit him with a vengeance’: Man’s limbs amputated after dog lick leads to blood infection

You might think twice after what happened to a Wisconsin man. Greg Manteufel lost both his legs after being licked by a dog.

Doctors believe he most likely contracted the bacteria by a lick from his own dog.

Greg Manteufel went to the hospital with what he thought was the flu, local news outlet Fox 6 Now reported yesterday (July 30).

Within hours of arriving in the hospital, his body went into septic shock.

Dawn Manteufel said doctors told them her husband's case is not common but more like a "crazy fluke".

Mark Warner (D-Va.), the lead Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is blaming Russian Federation . But it did compare the accounts to those set up by Russian-based Internet Research Agency , or IRA.

Doctors pumped him with antibiotics to stop the infection, his wife said, but clots blocked the flow of blood to his extremities, causing tissue and muscles to die. Earlier this summer, Greg Manteufel contracted Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacteria found in dog saliva that can cause sepsis, his family says.

Manteufel experienced severe complications, which caused his blood pressure to drop and the circulation in his legs to decrease rapidly. "Surprisingly enough, they did do it", Dawn Manteufel said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by a family friend to raise funds for prosthetic legs and plastic surgery on Greg's nose.

Dr Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist with Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told WITI that Mr Manteufel's case is an extremely rare occurrence and that pet owners need not panic.

Doctors snapped into action, first amputating both feet to stop the infection from spreading.

She said life as they knew it changed forever. "More than 99 percent of the people that have dogs will never have this issue", Munoz-Price said.

Dawn Manteufel said that within one week, her husband's legs were gone, followed by more surgeries to remove portions of his hands, and then half of both forearms. The majority of dogs are known to carry the Capnocytophaga canimorsus bacteria in their mouths, and a quick lick is all it would take for that bacteria to be transmitted. "It's just chance", Dr. Munoz-Price added.

'He is so thankful to be alive today and is taking one day at a time'.

People with weakened immune symptoms are at greater risk for becoming ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
