Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of Afghan militant network, dies

Leader of militant Haqqani network in Afghanistan has died, say Taliban

But Jalaluddin Haqqani leaves behind a legacy of deadly violence that threatens to live on for decades. Following the USA invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, he founded the eponymous Haqqani network, which quickly earned a reputation for brazen, high-profile attacks.

According to the National Directorate of Security, the detained militants were involved in some major terrorist related activities, including attacks on government and security officials, tribal elders, and roadside bombings. At least 58 people had died in one of the attacks at the Indian embassy in Kabul in 2008.

It was Haqqani's rigid interpretation of Islam that launched him on the road to insurgency in the early 1970s when he returned to Afghanistan to open a madrassa, or religious school, and organized a movement against Afghanistan's monarch, King Zahir Shah, according to unclassified US documents that tracked Haqqani's militant career from the early 1970s to his partnership with the Taliban in 1996.

"Haqqani had become quite old and was suffering from different health problems", a Taliban source told Reuters. The United States declared the Haqqani network a terrorist organization in 2012, and it has been one of the fiercest opponents for US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops in Afghanistan.

Following 9/11 and the USA -led invasion of Afghanistan in November 2001, the Taliban were routed from Kabul and Haqqani was ordered by Mullah Omar to move the Arab fighters to safety.

Emirates flight quarantined at JFK with 100 passengers "coughing nonstop"
By afternoon, there were still conflicting reports about how many people were sick and unanswered questions about the cause. On Wednesday, NBC News reported an Emirates flight arriving from Dubai and landing in John F.

The Haqqani network was formally designated a terrorist organization by the United States in 2012.

The founder of the Haqqani network, one of Afghanistan's most effective and feared militant groups, has died after a long illness, their allies the Afghan Taliban announced Tuesday.

He also maintained ties with Arab mujahideen volunteers and al-Qaeda. His group is at the heart of regional tensions, with Washington and Kabul long suspecting the Haqqanis of having links to Pakistan's shadowy military establishment.

In 2011, US Admiral Mike Mullen described Haqqani network a "veritable arm" of Pakistani intelligence. That charge has always been rejected by Pakistan, and argued that its inability to act against the network was due to its operations across the border.

Haqqani's rigid interpretation of Islam launched him on the road to insurgency in the early 1970s when he returned to Afghanistan to open a madrassa and organized a movement against Afghanistan's monarch, King Zahir Shah, according to unclassified USA documents that tracked Haqqani's militant career.

Haqqani was praised by the late USA congressman Charlie Wilson as "goodness personified".

During the 1980s Jalaluddin Haqqani was an Afghan Mujahideen commander fighting the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan with the help of the United States and Pakistan.

On Saturday, the Pentagon announced it was cancelling $300 million in aid to Pakistan over its lack of "decisive" action against militant groups.

However, analysts have said the moves are too little, too late, and that until the USA addresses Pakistan's fears over India, Islamabad will not shake its support for militant proxies.

The Haqqani network came to be during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s.
