Watches Issued As Isaac Closes in on Lesser Antilles

A remarkable satellite image shows Hurricane Florence in the Atlantic is one of just nine potentially unsafe storms now circling around the world.

That's more than eight stories tall, for reference.

In the latest information from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a Category 2 event. That's out in open ocean, where waves are much larger than those reaching the coast as storm surge.

A satellite altimeter under the northeast quadrant, the strongest area of the storm, recorded the wave. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area, also beginning late this morning.

We still have great uncertainty with our Hurricane Florence forecast. The storm has 45 miles per hour sustained winds with higher-speed gusts.

Her neighbors gave her the key to their house, which is two stories and might be safer from flooding, she said. The forward speed of the storm has slowed so the impacts will start to intensify and linger.

"There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect", said the NHC in its 11 a.m. September 12 update.

The remnants of the storm could even end up bringing some drier conditions to the south west of the UK.

"According to the IPMA's forecast, it is likely that the western islands [Flores and Corvo] should begin to feel the effects of the storm from Saturday afternoon". Expect winds to increase on Saturday to 15-30mph across the entire CSRA, with the 30mph more likely in the northern/eastern areas.

Isaac is expected to produce up to 3 inches of rain, with isolated maximum totals of up to 5 inches, across southeast Puerto Rico.

"Florence is forecast to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane as it approaches the US coast", the NHC said.
