Eliud Kipchoge sets new world record in Berlin Marathon win

Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge has set a new marathon world record, winning the Berlin race in 2 hours, 1 minute and 39 seconds on Sunday.

By the half way mark, Kipchoge had completely imposed himself on the race with chasing compatriot Wilson Kipsang and Amos Kipruto nowhere in sight.

Similarly astonishing is the speed at which Kipchoge ran the second-half of the race specifically.

"The last pacesetter went out at 25km mark but that still inspired me to continue pushing alone", explained Kipchoge adding that he shall defend his title perhaps with another new record next year.

Kipchoge's run was the biggest improvement on the marathon mark since Australian Derek Clayton took nearly two and a half minutes off the record in 1967. It certainly will go down as one of greatest spectacles the sport of running has ever seen, and will likely be a record that will stand for many years to come in the marathon.

But Kipchoge produced a stunning performance to take it by a clear 78 seconds.
