Theresa May facing enormous challenge as Brexit deadline looms

UK's May aims to gain Conservative control after storm Boris

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg said it was the PM's task to show she could "change the conversation" and demonstrate that Brexit would make a positive difference to people's lives at a time when her future was an "open question" within the party.

EU President Donald Tusk warned Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday that, with her Conservative Party conference finished, she must make a serious effort to negotiate a Brexit deal.

More broadly, rather than concentrating on the divisions within her own party, May's speech was more focussed on the nation and landed a number of blows on the Labour party, the front bench of which the Prime Minister derided as the "Jeremy Corbyn party".

The previous week, Boris Johnson had used his column in the Daily Telegraph to call May's Chequers proposal a "collapse of will by the British establishment, to deliver on the mandate of the people".

Robert Halfon, the MP for Harlow, said he was encouraged that the prime minister appeared to have returned to some of the concerns she set out when she first arrived in Downing Street.

And her Conservative government means hers, as she took a pop at everyone, even those in her own ranks, who aren't convinced by Brexit.

Today Theresa May announced the future lifting of the borrowing cap on councils to allow them to start building houses again - I wonder how she extracted that concession from the Chancellor, Philip Hammond.

Senate votes 'yes' to advance Kavanaugh nomination but outcome remains unclear
In an angry rebuttal later that day, Kavanaugh said the accusations were part of a "political hit" by Democrats. Amid tighter-than-usual security, a large group of protesters assembled on the grounds of the Capitol.

"We need to negotiate on something based on the Chequers proposals", he said.

"I'm surprised I'm going to say it, but what I caught of the prime minister's closing speech, she positively surprised me", he told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Thursday.

May has shown little sign of moving away from her blueprint, and had tried to put on a show of unity at her party conference in the central English city of Birmingham.

May continued to distance the Conservative Party's "decency and moderate patriotism" from Labour's actions by placing the two parties on a spectrum with an ever-more expanding opinion gap in the middle.

Theresa May namechecked the NHS more than Brexit in her conference speech, and did not utter the word Chequers once. And last week, I was at the Labour Party conference up in Liverpool.

The Conservative Party crowd roared and cheered. A catastrophic deal for us would be a border down the Irish Sea, which over a period of time could lead to a continuing divergence between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

Mr Davies, who voted to leave the European Union, said the country needed a deal and the Chequers proposal was the only one on the table at the moment.

Ford testified on Capitol Hill this week, after accusing Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both in high school. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat".

"We will help you get on the housing ladder".

A party not for the few, not even for the many, but for everyone who is willing to work hard and do their best.

MAY: Taking back control of our borders, laws and money - good for jobs, good for the union. May is optimistic, apparently, but only if her vision is upheld by everyone; the Conservatives, the Labour Party with its sizable minority and a mandate from members to push for a second referendum if needs be, and the great British public, as well as Northern Ireland.

In an upbeat passage in her speech, she will say: I passionately believe that our best days lie ahead of us and that our future is full of promise.

James Forsyth, political editor of the Spectator magazine and a columnist at the Sun newspaper said: "May delivers one of her best speeches, and will send activists home in better heart than they expected this morning".

She admitted that the public needed to see that "their hard work has paid off" after struggling with cuts to public services in a bid to balance the country's books.
