Google Plus to shut down after massive data breach

Google exposed user data, chose not to tell public - WSJ

A Wall Street Journal report published at the same time with Google's blog post claimed the API bug was far worse, and might have leaked user data since 2015, being only discovered when Google engineers started prodding Google sites for privacy leaks in preparation for the EU GDPR deadline. Google said the bug hasn't affected the personal data but is investigating the issue.

Google does not yet have a lead EU Supervisory authority, as the breach apparently happened before the EU's new privacy law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), was implemented. Google said it immediately fixed the security flaw and had not uncovered evidence that the information was mishandled by any of hundreds of third-party developers that may have had access to the user data. "None of those thresholds were met here", he said. Also, Smith is adamant Project Strobe found "no evidence" this bug was abused or even that the developers using the API were aware it existed. Google CEO Sundar Pichai was allegedly briefed on the company's plan not to notify users about the bug. After discovering and fixing the bug, Google ultimately decided against disclosing this information out of fear of regulatory pressure, the Journal reports.

Google is also going to be limiting access to the apps seeking access to your SMS and Gmail data. Google has also advised they will remove access to the contact interaction data from the Android Contacts API which allowed apps to show you your most recent contacts, within the next few months.

Heat-Butler talks sizzled, fizzled, with Richardson reportedly in play
Miami would acquire Butler's Bird Rights in a trade and could exceed the salary cap to re-sign him. He also said that there are no other serious trade talks at this point for Butler.

Google's attempt at a social network was never particularly popular - and became even less so when it admitted that 500,000 users may have had their data exposed.

"The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google user sessions are less than five seconds", the company said.

Allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by President Trump's 2016 USA election campaign, has hurt the shares of the world's biggest social network and prompted multiple investigations in the United States and Europe.

News of the security woes at Google Plus - and the company's failure to disclose them in a timely manner - sent shares of Alphabet were down $9.35, or 0. This method will better secure third party APIs with Google services, allowing for less data to be given to outside applications.

The exposed information did not include posts, messages or telephone numbers, a Google spokesperson said.
