World markets down after arrest of Huawei executive

The Chinese Embassy in Canada has issued a statement over the arrest of Meng Wanzhou

Mark Warner want Canada to follow the US and Australia and block Huawei from supplying equipment that would connect Canadians to the high-speed mobile network known as 5G.

A Canadian official said law enforcement took her into custody at the request of the US, which is seeking her extradition for allegedly violating its sanctions on Iran.

The chief financial officer for China's global tech giant, Huawei Technologies, has been arrested in Richmond and is facing extradition to the U.S.

"Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1".

The arrest occurred on the same day that US President Donald Trump and Xi struck the trade war truce at a summit in Argentina.

Then in April, the US Commerce Department found ZTE had violated a settlement reached in 2017 for breaking sanctions imposed on Iran, which forced the company to shut down most of its operations after being banned from importing US components.

Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times (one of China's most hawkish state-run newspapers), commented on his Twitter account that "The U.S. can't beat Huawei in the market".

Trump keeps up pressure on Democrats over border wall funding
While Democrats prefer a one-week extension, they likely would not object to a two-week delay, a Democratic aide said Monday. Bush, who died Friday at the age of 94, will be memorialized on Wednesday at the National Cathedral in Washington .

A Chinese government statement said Meng broke no USA or Canadian laws and demanded Canada "immediately correct the mistake" and release her.

The dispute over Meng's arrest comes just days after the US and China agreed to a temporary truce on their escalating trade conflict.

The SCMP obtained a transcript of an internal question-and-answer between Meng and her father, Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei.

"Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the chief financial officer of a giant Chinese telecom company for (allegedly) breaking USA sanctions against Iran", he said. He also said the Iran allegations are very damaging to Huawei and said China will push back hard.

Canada's ministry of justice confirmed the date and place of Ms Meng's arrest and added: "She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday".

Chinese officials are loudly calling for Meng's release and want Canada to reveal the reason for her arrest.

Huawei said it complies with all laws and rules where it operates, including export controls and sanctions of the United Nations, the USA and European Union.

While Beijing and Washington have agreed to a ceasefire on tariffs, they are still deeply divided over a range of issues beyond trade, including the South China Sea. ZTE Corp., another Chinese technology company, almost collapsed due to USA penalties for violating Iran sanctions before Trump rescued it following a request from Xi.

"Without any solid evidence, the Canadian and U.S. governments trampled on worldwide law by basically "kidnapping" Chinese citizen Meng", an official with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a Global Times op-ed.

Best Buy, one of the largest electronics retailers in the US, also recently stopped selling Huawei products.

It's still unclear how Meng's case will play out, but it could undermine talks between the United States and China aimed at defusing their damaging trade war.

Beijing has called for Meng's release, and the Chinese embassy in canada said that her arrest "seriously harmed the human rights of the victim".

Its growing smartphone brand is among the top three global suppliers behind Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc.by number of handsets sold.

This November, New Zealand's government banned its major telecommunications company Spark from using Huawei's equipment, which is described to "have a serious national security risk". China has said it will continue to do business with Iran despite the possible threat of USA penalties.
