Huawei: Chinese media accuses USA of 'hooliganism' over Meng Wanzhou arrest

Anger in China over arrest of Huawei's Meng Wanzhou in Canada

The executive, who is also the daughter of the Chinese electronics and telecommunications multinational's founder Ren Zhengfei, was detained by Canadian authorities in Vancouver, British Columbia, on December 1. It was the same day that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Argentina for the G20 summit, where they agreed a 90-truce in their trade war.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver on Saturday and is being sought for extradition by the U.S.

Details of the arrest have not been released but the U.S. has been investigating Huawei over possible violation of sanctions against Iran. A bail hearing for her extradition is set for Friday.

Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters Thursday that the Chinese government also wants Canadian officials to reveal the reasoning.

The arrest in Canada of a top Chinese technology executive for possible extradition to the United States has roiled markets and cast doubt on a recent U.S.

The Chinese embassy in Canada has also released a strongly worded statement.

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer, has been detained in Canada and may be extradited to the United States to face charges.

"So not respecting this particular arrest, but Huawei is one company we've been concerned about", he said. The Globe and Mail newspaper, citing law enforcement sources, said she is accused of trying to evade US curbs on trade with Iran.

Huawei is one of the world's largest telecommunications equipment and services providers.

It's also making it harder for Chinese firms to invest in USA companies or to buy American technology in such cutting-edge areas as robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

They're involved in the development of these networks around the world, BBC journalist Will Bain told us.

Meng Wanzhou aka Sabrina or Cathy meng serves as CFO and deputy chairwoman of Huawei's board.

Trump has often aimed political taunts at the Bush family, long a symbol of the traditional, more moderate wing of the U.S. The pair quickly bonded, with the former president even buying socks in honor of his beloved companion.

Last month, New Zealand blocked a mobile phone company from using Huawei equipment, saying it posed a "significant network security risk".

"Markets were already nervous before this arrest information came out", said David Dollar, a senior fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution who was an economic and financial emissary to China for the Treasury Department under President Barack Obama.

Suspicions over Huawei's links to the Chinese government have made the company a target for suspicion and the USA has led the charge to ban its products and services. The report follows a decision by the United States this year to ban government purchases of Huawei gear.

Both Huawei and ZTE have not only been barred from use by U.S. government agencies and contractors; they have also been mostly locked out of the American market.

An anonymous Canadian law-enforcement source told The Globe and Mail that the United States is alleging Meng tried to evade US sanctions against Iran.

Growing tensions between the US and China, Russia, and North Korea have caused global concern.

Terror attack kills 3 in southeastern port city
A number of Iranian media have reported a auto explosion in the largest port city in Sistan-and-Balochistan province, Chabahar. Chabahar, near Iran's border with Pakistan on the Sea of Oman, is home to a newly built port and is an economic free zone.

China has demanded the immediate release of Meng, the daughter of the company's founder, and a former officer in the Chinese military.

Why have some governments banned Huawei equipment?

David Mulroney, distinguished senior fellow at the University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs and former Canadian Ambassador to China says the arrest could result in a "deep freeze" between Canada and a country it could very much use to diversify its worldwide trade relations.

That includes theft of United States intellectual property by Chinese actors and forced technology transfers from USA companies to Chinese partners in joint ventures, he said. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters she faces extradition on charges related to us sanctions violations. Trump restored access after ZTE agreed to pay a $1 billion fine, replace its executive team and embed a US -chosen compliance team in the company.

US Senator Ben Sasse praised the action and said that it was "for breaking US sanctions against Iran".
