PM May rejects calls for vote delay, Brexit vote will go on

British Prime Minister Theresa May has toured the UK touting her EU withdrawal deal

May has repeatedly said that if lawmakers reject her deal with Brussels, which would see Britain exit the European Union on March 29 with continued close ties, the only alternatives are leaving without a deal or reversing Brexit.

He said the longer the backstop lasted, the more likely it would be that it was not consistent with European Union law - meaning it could be challenged in the courts.

Those calling for a second referendum "want that because they hope there is going to be a different answer - I don't think that's right", she said.

Amid growing speculation about the looming vote, several Cabinet ministers met Mrs May in Downing Street to discuss the crisis over the parliamentary vote on Thursday.

Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which provides May's Conservative Party government with a crucial Parliament majority with its 10 MPs, also voiced its anger, saying it was apparent why the government had tried to "hide" the legal position.

This could mean that the government had not actually received any formal legal advice on the Withdrawal Agreement before, despite May publishing her formal Brexit plan weeks earlier.

The government has published the full legal advice it was given on Theresa May's Brexit plan after MPs found the government to be in contempt of parliament for refusing to do so.

RICHARD Benyon was one of 26 Conservative MPs who rebelled against his own Government yesterday on a key vote which could determine what post-Brexit Britain looks like.

Before the prime minister appeared at the despatch box, her government had gone down to defeat for the third time in an hour.

A vote will take place in the House of Commons on December 11.

According to BuzzFeed, Downing Street advisers have urged Theresa May to consider a second referendum or a softer Brexit as options, as her team work out the best response to her deal being rejected.

Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary who had tabled the demand for its publication, said having reviewed the legal advice it was "obvious why this needed to be placed in the public domain".

"The prime minister can't keep pushing Parliament away or avoiding responsible scrutiny".

He said he had already been given authority by his local party's executive to submit a letter to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the party's backbench 1922 Committee, seeking a vote of no confidence in Mrs May.

"There are a number of items in the current deal I am not entirely happy with and we need to continue working towards a deal by March 29. Perhaps the Prime Minister can tell us which paragraphs breach the national interest?"

MPs' decisions over the next week would "set the course our country takes for decades to come", she said.

"And that's why it's important that ministers are out speaking with communities across the United Kingdom today about how the deal works for them".

"And with my whole heart I commend this motion to the House".

Theresa May is deploying her dwindling band of loyal ministers across the country today, in a bid to shore up support for her Brexit deal.
