Calls for Huawei boycott get mixed response in Europe

'Chinese, Polish nationals' arrested in Poland for 'spying'

The employee, identified as Weijing W., was arrested along with a Polish man, Piotr D., reported to be a former employee of Poland's security services who is now working for mobile provider Orange Polska.

This is the second incident after Huawei's CFO got arrested in Canada.

Wang and a former Polish security official were detained by the Polish intelligence agency on Friday in Poland.

One of them is Polish while the other one is Chinese.

According to the LinkedIn profile of "Stanislaw Wang" - Wang's Polish name, according to Polish public TV channel TVP - the detained Huawei employee worked at the Chinese consulate in Gdansk, Poland, before taking a job at the Chinese tech firm. If convicted, the pair could face up to 10 years imprisonment.

Rahaf al-Qunun: Saudi woman 'given refugee status'
The father, whose name has not been released, said he believes his daughter fled because she felt neglected. Ms Alqunun had planned to enter Australia on a tourist visa and seek asylum before she was detained.

Huawei, in turn, said in a statement that it is "aware of the situation" and that it has "no comment for the time being". "Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates, and we require every employee to abide by the laws and regulations in the countries where they are based", it continued.

Last Tuesday (8 January), ABW counterintelligence officers entered the homes of both suspects and secured documents and electronic data at the premises of Huawei Poland, the Office of Electronic Communications and Orange Poland.

American and other Western security experts, including three former heads of Canadian spy agencies, have raised concerns that Huawei could be asked by Beijing to incorporate backdoors into their equipment for spying or sabotage objective.

The government has evidence that the two suspects "cooperated with the Chinese services" as they conducted espionage against Poland, according to Stanisław Żaryn, spokesman for the special services branch, in a tweet about the case.

Poland's internal affairs minister, Joachim Brudzinski, on Friday called on the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to agree on a joint position over whether to exclude Huawei from their markets. Both are accused of espionage.

China's Foreign Ministry reportedly said Wang's detention is highly concerning. In New Zealand, the Government Communications Security Bureau turned down Spark's bid to use Huawei equipment on the new 5G network in November.

It has also become involved in the US-China trade dispute after the arrest last month of chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.

China arrested two Canadian citizens nearly immediately after Meng's arrest-Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who are accused of endangering China's national security.

Huawei in December said it expects to see a 21 percent rise in revenue for 2018 despite what it called "unfair treatment" around the world.
