Comatose woman who had baby is hospitalized, police say

Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

DNA samples will be collected from all male workers at a long-term care facility in Phoenix, Arizona where a female patient in a vegetative state recently gave birth, police say.

At a news conference Wednesday, Phoenix Police Sergeant Tommy Thompson said the department has gathered DNA samples as part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the woman's family has expressed outrage over the incident, stating they were traumatised by the alleged abuse and neglect that took place at a facility where she was supposed to be cared for.

Police launched a rape investigation after being called to the facility on December 29 regarding an infant who had been "coded".

Police say the baby was in fact in distress, and both mother and child were taken to the hospital where they are recovering.

Winter Storm Warning for southwest Virginia
However, another band of snow will pass through later tonight with another couple inches of accumulation possible. If the storm swings further north than expected it could include rain and sleet mixed with the snow.

A welcome development, according to a statement from Hacienda Healthcare, "We had consulted attorneys to determine whether it would be legal for our company to compel our employees to undergo DNA testing conducted through Hacienda or for Hacienda to conduct voluntary genetic testing of staffers".

Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons on Monday after 28 years at the facility, which was rated "much below average" on the Medicare website and almost had its government funding revoked after a 2013 investigation found at least one staff member was making inappropriate sexual comments to patients and staff were deficient in reporting patient abuse complaints.

Terry Rambler, a spokesman for the San Carlos Apache tribe that the victim is a member of said: 'On behalf of the tribe, I am deeply shocked and horrified at the treatment of one of our members.

Let's hope the authorities catch the perpetrator so that justice can be served. An anonymous care home source told how the first signs of the woman's pregnancy were her moans as she went into labor.

A sexual assault investigation was begun immediately, police have said. They also say she was still in a coma when she gave birth.

Jayme Closs, missing United States teen, found alive after 87-day search
There is no evidence in the early stages of the investigation that links Patterson to the parents or to Jayme, Fitzgerald said. Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, was arrested in the kidnapping of Wisconsin teen Jayme Closs . "(Jayme) don't know him from Adam.

The now-former CEO of Hacienda HealthCare, Bill Timmons, has also stayed silent about exactly what he knew and when he knew it.

"None of the staff were aware that she was pregnant until she was pretty much giving birth", the source said.

In recent days police have addressed the media to give more information about the sexual assault investigation now underway, after they were alerted to the birth.

Board member Gary Orman said the facility "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

The facility specializes in providing around-the-clock care for infants, children and young adults with developmental disabilities or who are "medically fragile". Gov. Doug Ducey's office has called the situation "deeply troubling".

"During this time, the agency has required heightened safety measures be implemented at the facility including increased staff presence during patient interactions, increased monitoring of the patient care areas, and increased security measures with respect to visitors at the facility".
