UK's Prince Philip 'voluntarily surrenders' driving licence after crash

Prince Philip surrenders his driving licence

The duke's driving woes began when his auto flipped over after he pulled out into a busy A road and collided with a Kia, carrying a nine-month old boy, his mother and another passenger.

Buckingham Palace says Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, has voluntarily surrendered his licence "after careful consideration".

The 97-year-old duke sent a note to Emma Fairweather, 46, after she suffered a broken wrist following a collision with his Land Rover on January 17.

Though he needed assistance to exit his overturned wheels, the prince sustained no injuries.

European round-up: Edinson Cavani doubtful for Manchester United tie
Edinson Cavani is a doubt for Paris Saint-Germain's trip to Manchester United this week after getting injured on Saturday. Tuchel's side will also be missing Brazil striker Neymar, who has been ruled out with a foot injury .

The crash investigation file is now being considered by the Crown Prosecution Service, but Fairweather worries that Prince Philip's royal status will influence the outcome.

The January crash occurred just outside the royal family's Sandringham estate when the Duke's auto collided with another vehicle, injuring passenger Emma Fairweather.

Sky News' royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills said the decision was likely a hard one for the prince, a keen motorist.

Two days after the accident, Prince Philip was seen behind the wheel of a new auto and was given "suitable words of advice" by police when he was photographed not wearing a seatbelt while on a public road. According to reports, the Duke of Edinburgh was subsequently offered "suitable words of advice" by a Norfolk police officer.

"I have been across that crossing any number of times and I know very well the amount of traffic that uses that main road", the Duke of Edinburgh wrote, blaming the incident on bright sunlight.
