Greece Backs Macedonia's NATO Accession, Settles Dispute

Greek parliament ratifies NATO accord with Republic of North Macedonia

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras defended the agreement Greece signed with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to end a long-standing dispute over the country's name, saying he believed his government has "done its patriotic duty".

A majority of 153 lawmakers supported the legislation, while 140 voted against.

Greek approval of FYROM's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation accession bid is the final step in the deal.

Greece's objections to Skopje's use of the name "Macedonia" since the country's independence in 1991 complicated bids by the small Western Balkan state to join the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

However, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev were able to push through their accord as part of efforts to normalize relations.

Tsipras on Friday said the deal had "upgraded" Greece's global standing.

Under the deal, Macedonia will be renamed "the Republic of North Macedonia" and Greece will drop objections to the country joining the European Union and NATO.

NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg presided over Wednesday's ceremony a NATO's headquarters, where Macedonia was invited to join the pact.

Next year's medals will be made in part from metal recycled from cellphones and small electronic devices. Inside most smartphones , there are precious metal materials, including gold, silver, and bronze.

Many in the West hope the change will also limit the influence of Russian Federation, which has at times tried to exert influence on the soon to be North Macedonia.

FYROM will then write to the United Nations, its member states and global organizations, formally announcing the name change.

Since 1991, when FYROM declared independence from Yugoslavia choosing the name Macedonia, Athens has been protesting, fearing that the new state implied claims on Greek territory, as a province in northern Greece has the same name.

The NATO ratification process typically takes about a year, and the United States has said it expects North Macedonia to formally join the alliance in 2020.
