British PM Theresa May must chip away Brexit resistance bloc by bloc

British PM May fails to win over her party ahead of Brexit vote

MPs said they would wait for the attorney-general to present his opinion before deciding on voting for the agreement or not.

"Discussions are ongoing between ourselves and the EU", May's spokesman told reporters, insisting that Tuesday's vote would take place as planned.

However, parliament is expected firmly to reject a "no-deal" Brexit as well, so MPs would then vote again on Thursday - on whether government should request a delay to the leaving date to allow further talks.

In the pivotal Paragraph 19 of his advice, Mr Cox wrote: "However, the legal risk remains unchanged that if through no such demonstrable failure of either party, but simply because of intractable differences, that situation does arise, the United Kingdom would have, at least while the fundamental circumstances remained the same, no internationally lawful means of exiting the Protocol's arrangements, save by agreement".

This suggests that the Prime Minister is hoping to have held another meaningful vote on the deal by 20 March - just nine days before the deadline.

Many Brexiteers fear the backstop, aimed at avoiding controls on the border between the British province of Northern Ireland and EU-member Ireland, could trap the United Kingdom in the EU's orbit indefinitely.

Some British lawmakers had warned their Brexit-backing colleagues that rejecting the deal could lead to Britain's departure being postponed indefinitely, because a delay would give momentum to opponents of withdrawal.

The answer to this will come down to the legal advice from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox.

They said its potentially indefinite nature and the UK's inability to withdraw from it unilaterally eroded the UK's sovereignty and did not deliver a true withdrawal from the EU.

Having witnessed her initial deal being defeated in the Commons in January by 230 votes (the largest government defeat in over 100 years), the Prime Minister had been negotiating with the European Union for more concessions, in order to push her deal through Parliament.

She concluded the meeting by telling ministerial colleagues: "Today is the day".

On the eve of Tuesday's vote in London, May flew to Strasbourg, France, to seek revisions, guarantees or other changes from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that would persuade reluctant British legislators to back her withdrawal agreement with the EU, which they resoundingly rejected in January. Juncker's warning of "no third chance" was a message designed not only for Conservative rebels but the Prime Minister herself.

The main opposition Labour Party also maintained its opposition to the deal.

Another defeat on Tuesday would tee up additional votes on the way ahead.

The U.K.is set to leave the bloc March 29 as a result of a 2016 referendum where British voters made a decision to leave the union after more than 40 years of membership.

And Corbyn's plan includes a new customs union with the EU to solve the issue of the border in Ireland. I wish the Prime Minister had not been made to be frightened of the people who sat behind her.

That option is fraught with economic dangers and is backed only by hardcore proponents of the divorce.

Now that the House of Commons gave leaving the European Union without an agreement a thumbs down, it is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to ask the European Union to delay Brexit by up to three months.

The other 27 nations would need to back the extension unanimously and decide how long it should be.

Any postponement may have to be short-lived.

"If there is a solution to the current impasse, it can only be found in London", it said, adding that "today's vote has significantly increased the likelihood of a "no-deal" Brexit".
