Conrad Black was convicted in 2007 on fraud charges, including alleged embezzlement, and obstruction of justice. Black, who has served 2 years of a 6 1/2 year prison term, was released on bail in July while the court reexamines his case.

Sanders noted that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh and singer Elton John had all publicly supported Black. "These include comprehensive biographies of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Richard M. Nixon, a complete history of Canada, and an impressive essay evaluating how the world would have been different had Japan not attacked Pearl Harbor" the statement continued.

Montreal-born Black renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2001 after a spat with then prime minister Jean Chretien, who protested the media owner's peerage to Britain's House of Lords.

"He could not have been more gracious and quickly got to his point: he was granting me a full pardon", wrote Black, who used much of the rest of the column to explain the case.

Roy made 76 and there were also worthy contributions from Moeen Ali (46 not out), Joe Root (43) and Ben Stokes (37). The only downside for England was that Morgan has risked a potential one-match ban for his side's slow over rates.

Black also said he and President Trump bemoaned the "antics" of American prosecutors both men have come into contact with, including special counsel Robert Mueller.

However, the pressure from shareholders would ultimately lead to a probe by an internal committee of directors, followed by investigations of Black's businesses by the U.S. Securities Commission and the Department of Justice, which culminated in criminal charges of fraud and obstruction of justice against him.

Trump gave him permission to say the motivation for the pardon was an unjust verdict.

"'We've known each other a long time, ' the president told me, 'but that wasn't any part of the reason".

Dean Smith's side could not capitalise on that however, and as chances came and went for the Villans in extra time, the inevitable penalty shootout came about.

Exactly one year after publishing a book praising Trump, Conrad Black granted a full pardon by 45. "He said that there would be some controversy, "but you can handle that better than anyone".
